Cobol Conversion to Java

I've been recently put to the task of working with a legacy system written in Cobol. Since I'm most familiar with Java, I was wondering if it is possible to convert cobol into Java so that I could refactor and gain a better understanding of the code. So does anyone know of any good cobol to java converters out there. Preferably free.

Also any Java programmers here had a similar experience with cobol like me? What is your approach when tackling the problem?
