How Marker Interface works

I want to know how does the marker interface work.A marker/tagged interface is an interface which doesn't have a body, and if it does'nt have any then how it works when we implement them.For eg. Serilizable is an example,we implement them to make object eligible for serialization without implementing any of its abstract methods.
