to run a java program on a m/c at least you need JRE(X any ver) installed on the machine.then you can run the compiled java program.
After JAVA2 ,distribution of JRE has made separately.Which strictly follow the java concept "Write once run anywhere".

If you want to devlope code and run the program you must have JDK(any ver) installed.JDK come up with JAVA compiler "JAVAC" and all other neccessary tools.Once you have JDK installed in your system you explore "bin" folder.
