May be it's just me but...
After the tsunami my two digital clocks (microwave and radio) in the kitchen began to show time ~4 minutes faster. My friend reported the same thing -- his three digital clocks were off forward by about 4 minutes. Are we going nuts or can someone report the same happening?

All right brain, you don't like me and I don't like you, but let's just do this one thing so I can get back to killing you with beer.

I did read an article that says the shift in the plates moved some land masses closer to the center of the earth, thus increasing the earth's roation. In essence, making each day shorter by 4 microseconds.

I don't think this would effect your clocks that much, though, at least not that fast...

Well, presumably tectonic movements did affect the gravitational field (or at least caused some disturbance). Since the time (and the clocks that measure it) are affected by the gravitational field due to the relativistic effects, it's not insane to suppose that some sort of time shift did occur (in addition to the one mentioned in the CNN article). However, I would guess that the size of that time shift would be measured in very small units, certainly not in minutes.

Yeah, any general relativistic effects here would be really tiny. Nothing like four minutes.

Alex, are you sure that it's the digital clocks that are the problem? Perhaps whatever you're using as a reference is off? Or was off, and has been corrected? And where are you and your friend located, anyway?

I know it the clock. Couple of days prior to tsunami we had a power outage in our building. After power came back on I turned on my cable box and 'Fox News Channel' and the time on both was the same, let say 10:34pm. I went to the kitchen and set the time on microwave to 10:35pm exectly (because I can see my tv/cable box from kitchen). Everything was ok. Then on Monday I go in the kitchen turn on the TV time is 1:12pm. Look at microwave/radio time is 1:16pm. The next day while carpooling with my friend I told him about this and he said that he noticed that his clocks were off by about 4 minutes. Trust me I am not a big fan of all those 'twilight zone' stories, but this is just too weird. May be there was some magnetic pool of some sort that messed with clock's inner workings? There were news that animals felt that something was 'out of wack' and headed for higher grounds hours (days?) before the tsunami, so I am sure pressure/magnetic fields change played important role in their decision to leave their normal habitat. As for my place of residence: Brooklyn, NY.
On another note, related to animals feeling the pressure of natural disasters. I read and heard about this phenomena in the past. Even when hurricanes Ivan/Charlie hit Southern US there were news that animals started behaving differently (calming down) just before the storm. So why every time something big like this happens everyone talks about this as it was just discovered? We should observe our 'little brothers and sisters' more closly, God did not create them just for food. (yeah that's sound corny)
