There are no real answers to these questions. Everyone has slightly different learning styles, so what works best for person 'a' might not work best for person 'b'.

Having said that, MANY folks around here (myself included) swear by "Head First Java", by Bert Bates and Kathy Sierra. Both of the authors are a part of this community, and you'll see them (well, mostly just Bert) around here.

Make sure you check out our SCJP forum for more tips and advice.

How long it takes again depends on how much time you have to learn, and what kind of person you are. I spent about 6 months preparing, mostly by taking a 2-hour a week class at my community college. Others claim it can be done in 6 weeks... some spend a year or two (or more). it all depends on how much time you have to put into it.

Welcome to JavaRanch!

Have a look at the Java Beginners FAQ, which contains a lot of useful information for Java beginners.

Sun has a very good set of tutorials.

If you're looking for a book, then "Head First Java", which Fread already mentioned, is one of the most popular books with people who are starting with Java.
