checked and Unchecked exceptions

what are the checked and unchecked exceptions.....

Checked exception - you need to declare them, otherwise compiler will crip.
Unchecked exception - you dont need to declare, compiler would let you go.

checked excetions are compile time exceptions which you can handle using try-catch and unchecked are runtime exceptions which you cannot handle.

I have this hunch that all checked exceptions occur because there is a 'throw/throws' happening somewhere down the line. Am i correct?
