James Doohan, the actor who played Scotty on the original Star Trek, passed away this morning. Story. Sad to see one of my childhood heroes go. The guy had an interesting life. I knew he was missing a finger; didn't realize it had been lost at D-Day. Also interesting to note that smoking apparently saved his life on that day. He will be missed...

I just ran across the same story and was about to post something myself. He will be missed. Scotty was always my favorite of the original crew.

Of all the TOS cast members, he's the only one who people say, time and again, really inspired them. It's not an exaggeration to say that a generation of engineers wanted to be Scotty, and Doohan's loveable, humble portrayal is a big part of that.
