ePlanetLabs "Study Guides"

Hello All,

First of all, I want to thank you all for your contributions in the matters of the world of Java's certifications!

The thing i want to write about is the ePlanetLabs's "Study Guides". Don't get fooled by these guys telling you that with their study guides you're 100% sure to pass the exam.

I bought the "Study Guides" for SCDJWS and guess what i found...Mikalai Zaikin's notes and quiz! For US$29.00 dollars!!!

I don't really think this is fair because on one side Mikalai is giving it for free to the community (and the Copyright of his guides says: "Redistribution of this document is permitted as long as it is not used for profits"), and on the other side one's looking for a complete source where one can focus and (almost) forget about the rest of the sources.

This document is even sold as a property of ePlanetLabs and Mikalai's name doesn't appear anywhere.

I don't know if any of you guys can do something against them, but i'd suggest to create a section in all the certifications links of javaranch (like "SCDJWS Links", "SCWCD Links" and the rest of them) called "Not Recommended Sources" or something like that.

By the moment i've been scammed and i'll have to look for the traditional sources to get certified.

I hope this doesn't happen to any of you.

***Note: I don't know if Mikalai made an agreement with ePlanetLabs in order to have his notes sold. If that's not the case, what ePlanetLabs is doing is very wrong!

Take Care!

Hi Elder !

Thanks for your report.

1) I have not made any agreement with "ePlanetLabs". They are obviously scammers.
2) There was a feedback from some rancher before that they sell my WSD Guide (which is free), now they sell my WSD Quiz - this violates my copyright.
3) For everyone: WSD Guide in PDF is free and available from JavaRanch - here.
4) WSD Quiz from author (me) will be much more cheaper than $29.
5) Sorry to hear that you got scammed by "ePlanetLabs", Elder, you may ask for refund and try to get your money back.

Best regards and good luck !
MZ

I already asked for a refund...i'm waiting for their answer.

I even told them that legal action could be taken against them for selling your (MZ's) stuff!

Hello, Elder !

I am not 100% sure, but in case of negative response, you can contact your bank (stop by a local branch) and ask the bank to rollback the transaction. This may work.

JFYI: previous discussion of their SCDJWS guide

good luck,
MZ

Dear MZ

Am I allowed to translate your study guide into other languages,
and share it with people free?

ofcuz, not your quizs.

Hello, Shouton !

WSD Guide is free and can be freely used (re-distributed/translated) with non-commercial purpose.

Feel free to translate it if you wish.

Note, SCDJWS 1.4 is a bit outdated (released in 2004), and new SCDJWS 5.0 is coming 2009 (my guess).

Thanks,
MZ

Hi guys. I understand this is a forum about java, but I was also screwed by eplanet labs, and was searching on the web who is as well. Today I went to write for my IBM system x technical principles exam, only to find the paper has nothing what-so-ever to do with what these guys have on the study guide. How do i go about reclaiming my money back? Thanks a lot.

PS: 90% of the question were not in the guide. I failed by 42%!!

While I have no knowledge about ePlanetLabs or the exam you took, using study guides generally is not sufficient to pass any exam. You will need to spend a lot more time gaining actual experience of the subject at hand than you spend studying such a guide - that's why it's called a guide, not a tutorial.

Also, it's generally not allowed to republish actual exam questions, so you should not expect to have encountered any of the exam questions beforehand.

You can open a dispute though paypal.com to get your money back or request a refund in plimus.com (the service that eplanetlabs.com uses to manage payments).

Same thing happened to me and after some online discussions through plimus.com i got my money back.
