I read an article in National Geographic Adventure! in the dentist's waiting room yesterday about an African expedition. They were riding camels. I won't go into the details here, but one thing that struck me was the people they met who routinely practice various forms of surgery on themselves and on eachother -- cutting off skin cancers, for example. Weird, but obviously makes sense, living very far from civilization.

Nowhere near on the same scale, but one form of self-repair I regularly practice -- just had to do it this morning, in fact -- is using Krazy Glue (isocyanoacrylate) to repair fingernails. I'm clumsy enough where I rather frequently manage to cut or tear a fingernail on something I'm working on, and using Krazy Glue to put it back together generally works long enough for it to grow out, avoiding a lot of discomfort.

So I was wondering 1) whether I'm the only person here who has ever done this, and 2) if anyone else has any gory tales of self-repair procedures they've been involved in.

No, you are not the only one who does this. This thread on the snopes message board might interest you.

i dont remember me do one yet, other than like cutting my nose hair for maintenance or something like that.

but in the movies, theres a lot, like Rambo, in Rambo I. I think when he got shot, he used a knife and his finger to pull it out, and then he sewed up his wound.

My dad had a story to tell, when I was a kid, about how he used to take medical injection himself, as others in the family weren't educated enough to do it..also he wanted to save some money, so couldn't go to doc. for injection everyday..

May be its a common thing that many can do, but being a guy who gets scared to take injection even at a doc.s place, it seemed gory for me..

Just before I fall asleep, I pacify the neurons that were on fire all day. Not sure if it qualifies as a "repair", because it actually involves breaking the connections by "unthinking" the stuff.

One thing that concerns me is that if I think too much I may burn out my neurons. Sending all that electricity through them can't be good for them. To avoid this problem, I try to avoid thinking except for on special occasions. I recommend the approach - its surprising how much can be done in life without thinking being involved.

Besides, acting stupid is way easier then being clever, no one asks you to do complicated stuff for a start. Better still, if you can make people suspect that you are only pretending to be stupid, then you get the best of both worlds - you avoid complicated things, while at the same time people wonder if you may be cleverer then them. This works at its best when you actually are a bit on the intellectually challenged side.
