Trouble with getElementById() in Firefox

This code works great in IE6, but in FireFox the object (reportView) returns as 'null'. How can I make it work in both browsers? cboReportView is a combo box.

var reportView=document.getElementById("cboReportView");

if(reportView.value == 'Composite'){

Sound like you didn't define id attribute inside your select list.

like this.

<select id="cboReportView">
  <option value ="volvo">Volvo</option>
</select>

Yes, your code is correct. I had it like this...

<select name="cboReportView">

Looks like Firefox does not mix id and name attributes like IE does.

Yes, IE checks name if it can't find an the id attribute, but you should remember that you could have two different values in those params and IE will not treat name as id.

for example:

<select name="foo" id="bar">

which could be referenced (if nested in a form) like:

document.getElementById('bar')

or

document.myform.foo
