Reading the XML file using DOM

I am using the below code to extract the values of the titles tag which is a child of item tag in the XML.

When i do like this,it is extracting all the values from the XML and putting it on the browser as below
But what i exactly want is to list these values in the drop down box(id ="bp"). So i have written a code something like this.

And the appendToSelect is defined as

But while doing like this, nothing gets added into the dropdown box.
