Tomcat down and up

Today our Tomcat 4.1.27 went down today a couple times today and gave back the generic "page not found" on all the web pages. That message only shows up when the container is shut down but in this case it was not shut down. It only stayed down for 5 minutes each time and came back up with nobody starting it up. Please advise what could cause this.

Pretty mysterious alright. Perhaps your DNS server was being fiddled with and the request never actually got to Tomcat at all??

I would certainly look for clues in the Tomcat logs.
