-----------------------

When gulli-danda and kanche (marbles) were more popular than cricket ...

When we always had friends to play aais-paais (I Spy), chhepan-chhepai
and pitthoo anytime ...

When we desperately waited for 'yeh jo hai jindagi'

When chitrahaar, vikram-baitaal, dada daadi ki kahaniyaan were so
fulfilling ...

When there was just one TV in every five houses and

When bisleris were not sold in the trains and we were worrying if papas
will get back into the train in time
or not when they were getting down at stations to fill up the water bottle
..

When we were going to bed by 9.00pm sharp except for the 'yeh jo hai
jindagi' day ..

When Holis & Diwalis meant mostly hand-made pakwaans and sweets and moms
seeking our help while preparing them..

When Maths teachers were not worried of our mummys and papas while
slapping/beating us ...

When we were exchanging comics and stamps and chacha-chaudaris and billus
were our heroes ...

When we were in nanihaals every summer and loved flying kites and plucking
and eating unripe mangoes and leechis ..

When one movie every Sunday evening on television was more than one asked
for and 'ek do teen chaar' and 'Rajni' inspired us ..

When 50 paisa meant at least 10 toffees ..

When left over pages of the last years notebooks were used for rough work
or even fair work ..

When 'chelpark' and 'natraaj' were encouraged against 'reynolds and
family' ..

When the first rain meant getting drenched and playing in water and mud
and making 'kaagaj ki kishtis' ..

When there were no phones to tell friends that we will be at their homes
at six in the evening ..

When our parents always had 15 paise blue colored 'antardesis' and 5 paise
machli wale stamps at home ...

When we remembered tens of jokes and were not finding 'ice-cream and papa'
type jokes foolish enough to stop us from laughing ..

When we were not seeing patakhes on Diwalis and gulaals on Holis as air
and noise polluting or allergic agents ...

the list can be endless ...

on the serious note I would like to summarise with ..
When we were using our hearts more than our brains, even for
scientifically brainy activities like 'thinking' and 'deciding' ..

When we were crying and laughing more often, more openly and more
sincerily ..

When we were enjoying our present more than worrying about our future ..

When being emotional was not synonymous to being weak ...

When sharing worries and happinesses didnt mean getting vulnerable to the
listener ..

When blacks and whites were the favourite colors instead of greys ..

When journeys also were important and not just the destinations ...

When life was a passenger's sleeper giving enough time and opportunity to
enjoy the sceneries from its open
and transparent glass windows instead of some superfast's second ac with
its curtained, closed and dark windows ..

I really miss .. do u?,

I spend 24 year in a small village that has population of 3500.
I will write a long post about my experience during that period soon.

eh daulat bhi lelo, yeh shoharat bhi lelo
Bhale cheen lo, mujhse meri jawani
Magar mujhko lautado bachpan ka saawan
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani
Yeh daulat bhi lelo, yeh shoharat bhi lelo
Bhale cheen lo, mujhse meri jawani
Magar mujhko lautado bachpan ka saawan
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani

Muhalle ki sabse, nishaani poorani
Woh budhiya jise, bachhe kehte the nani
Woh nani ki baton mein pariyon ka dehra
Woh chehre ki jhuriyon mein sadiyon ka tera
Bhulaye nahi, bhul sakta hain koi
Woh choti si raatein, woh lambi kahani
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani

Kadi dhoop mein, apne ghar se nikalna
Woh chidiya, woh bulbul, woh titli pakadna
Woh budhiya ki shaadi pey ladna jaghadna
Woh jhulo se girna, woh girke sambhalna
Woh pital ke chaliyon ke pyaare se tohfay
Woh tooti hui, choodiyon ki nishaani
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani

Kabhi ret ke, oonche keelon pe jaanaa
Gharonde banana, banake mitaana
Woh maasoom chahat ki tasveer apni
Woh khwabon, khilono ki jaagir apni
Naa duniya kaa gum tha, naa rishton ke bandhan
Badi khoobsurat, thi woh zindagaani
Yeh daulat bhi lelo, yeh shoharat bhi lelo
Bhale cheen lo, mujhse meri jawani
Magar mujhko lautado bachpan ka sawan
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani

Feeling nostalgic, very true I think most of us must have gone through this phase who all are 25+.
Hmm "Yeh jo hai Jindagi" I used wait desperately for that TV serial on every friday 9:00 PM, I still remember the day and time, now from past ten year or so I havent watched any TV series.

After cable TV, TV has lost its charm.

Some other good programs from old era are TWTW(The World This Week), if I remember correctly then it was one hr program and it was really good show.

Other favourites were:
Subah
Chunauti
Mr & Mrs. (actor was Jayant Kriplani)
Saptahiki (I used to write program timing in one copy )
Friday night movies
.
.
.
.

getting old.. there are lot of serials for which I fail to recollect the name ..

ahhhh.... golden days

Many people used to do that writing their favorite program.
What was the name of the program where Tabassum used to interview actors/actress? This was in early eighties I believe.

I think I am older than you

Before 8:40 pm, Samachar used to come at 9:00pm to 9:20pm. Then there would be one serial(like Hum-Log) and then English news would follow at 9:50pm to 10:10pm.
Then a woman with brown eyes(no no .. I had black & white TV at that time ) would come to announce next day programmes. Then either some political discussion would take place or some dance programme. At 11:00 pm sharp DD would close down.

and people like me, who used to watch TV a lot, then go to bed and sleep

Its amazing to see how we remember small things of our childhood days, if anyone ask me about a moment of my life juts 2 years back most probably I would not be able to recall untill and unless its a very special moment.

Possible. I remember watching TV programs after 1984.Prior to that TV was limited to watching one Marathi movie on Satuday evening and one Hindi movie on Sunday evening intermittantly watching the message 'rukawat ke liye khed hai'

And Sunit Tandon and the whole load of them. And, the breathtaking scenery from 'Kashmir Dharshan', Surabhi's bubly Renuka Sahane was a delight to look at, just like the actual program itself!

And the best of them all was of course Pranoy Roy's 'The World This Week' - its where I first heard about the all new 'Information Superhighway' and 'Virtual Reality' - they even had some clips of the movie 'The Lawnmower Man' to explain the whole new wonderful world of Virtual Reality!

More than those TV serials (TV entered in my life much later, as my folks were against it when we were kids -- now they can't live without it!! ) I miss those olden days, games and secure, laid-back lifestyle. Getting nostalgic....

Have you heard "O des aane wale bata" by Abida Paween? Awesome!!! Just too good to be true, and the entire album is penned by poets/shaayars from both
countries - India & pakistan.

Some lines from that gahazal (I know there's separate thread for this...but they are relevant here)

Hum khel jo khela karte the, kya ab bhi wo saare hote hai!
O des se aane wale bata, kis haal me hai wo paak watan....

Amazing!!! And I miss those 3 to 4 weeks Diwali vacation as well, have to live with 3-4 days holidays now!!!

How many of you built forts during Diwali??? I think this is done only in some parts of Maharashtra, I did love it a lot when I was a kid. To see those tiny bushes growing on your fort was a beautiful feeling...Buying crackers was another!!!

It was a bit of a let down, no ghosts [ ] but smugglers.

Anyways that series, Honee Anhonee, Ek Shunya Shunya [I think this was specific to Mumbai] made watching TV worthwhile.

Nowadays, I dun bother much with the series which run on cable.... [I am sounding so much like my dad... "in our days".... ]

RK what prompted you to go down this memory lane..... ?

“Secrete of The Sea” was the only program on wild life that use to come on every Sunday after noon.

Tamas was really nice once upon a time.

Gandevta – a serial based in Bengali novel was also good.

And Ramayana and Mahabharata were just amazing. It was like curfew on roads when they were on air.

And most depressing thing was, when any dignities passed away, they stop airing entertainment program and air only classical music.

And they used to display Hockey match during the Cricket

Parakh from Vinod Dua was good, it was on every Saturday.

And yeah Krishidesh around 6:30 or 7:00 everyday.

Anybody remembering Gul Gulshan Gulfam, Circus , Fauji?
Then there was one serial based on work of Munshi Premchand.

I remeber the title song of kile ka rahaysa. It was so scary.

In marathi, there were Dwidhata, adhantari,Hallo Inspector.

I still watch DD.(No alternative) but the level is so low that sometimes I switch off the TV.If you want to experence watch "Ankhe".

Star Trek was a crze in those days. I remember one senior from my school actually shaved his eyebrows to imitate Mt. Spock!!!

We would fold two match-boxes, tie them smartly with rubberband and use t as those flap-phones. Now we do indeed have those flap cell-phones. I still love some of the Samsung models which are flap-phones. Guess it has some connection with my childhood...
