How about celebrating birthdays on the ranch. That could be a novel idea of fostering strong bonds among the ranch fraternity.
Any b'days next week?
cheers

38.88767123287671232876712328767123 as of May 13. Hmmm...but I did'nt account for leap years, so I guess I'm younger than I thought. And John, you're not an old fart, you're just a kid

37... 38 This Friday.
Programming is my second career. Started on the AS400, still on the AS400. Looking to move to Java, It is supported pretty good by IBM. RPG is my native tongue. It's only spoken on the AS400 and some older IBM mid-range platforms.

I recently did a little mini-survery within the Moderators only forum on this very question and I can tell you the average age of the Bartenders and Sheriffs combined is 35 ... well 34.84 ... but some people refused to answer so I rounded up!!
I'm the baby of the moderators though at a mere 23 year old ... soon to be 24 though in just 5 weeks time

Angela,
'Baby of the moderators'....such a sweet phrase. You seem to be on the fast track.....a sheriff at 23!! You must be with some big company outside the ranch....right?

Oh if only I could progress through the ranks at British Airways just as quickly!!!
I was very lucky, I became a Ranch Hand during a time when there was an extreme shortage of Bartenders and so was given that title purely because I volunteered .. now we have lots of Bartenders and the recruitment process is a bit more formal. Anyway once I became a moderator I volunteered for a few site maintainence tasks (Writing the SCJP FAQ and updating the main Saloon FAQ) then was assigned the task of re-vamping the Bunkhouse, which I worked really hard on, and so was duly rewarded with a Sheriff's badge I had always aspired to be a Sheriff but you could have knocked me over with a feather when Paul asked if I wanted the job (as if I'd say no!). The Bunkhouse is still my main priority, although now I have the word "trainee" taken from my real job title at BA I have a LOT more work so unfortunatly can't devote as much time as I would like to it. I've always said, if I could work full-time for the ranch I'd do it, I love this place! However, now I manage a wonderful team who all work together to get the Bunkhouse running smoothly, we always have things in the pipeline though.
As for being the baby of the moderators, it really doesn't make any difference, I have as much say as any of the others, and I think in a place like this age is completely irrelevent. Three other moderators who took part in my survery are under 30 and four are over 45 (I'll not name them, it wouldn't be fair!) Life experience plays very little part in this place, it's much more about personality, attitude and of course technical knowledge (having it and sharing or aquiring it from those who share!)

Ray, great to see another AS400 (now iSeries) guy on the Ranch! I have programmed in RPG for nearly 5 years. Have now changed over to more current stuff - I am in IBM Rochester, doing some AS400 internals using C/C++ and Java... Pretty low-level, no more RPG; but most of our customers use it

Nanhesru... Glad to see another 400 guy. Er, well that is if you're a guy. Forgive my cultural ignorance, but I've never seen that name before.
Anyway, I don't want to take this thread in a new direction, so I'll start a new one.
P.S. 6'-5" 225lbs. No I can't dunk. Extremely white.

Nanhesru,
The start of your post sounds like the blurting of prospective cadet during a military recruitment drive.....

Yes, I am a guy, from India. I can understand about the name, my own compatriots cannot tell much from it
>sounds like the blurting of prospective cadet
Before people start thinking I am "malnourished", let me assure them, my veggi diet is completely nourishing... I am the slim/athletic type
I provided those extra stats, in case someone's interested in the average height/weight in the ranch
