To all who dosn't know Saravana Stores, it is just like the Wall-Mart in the US. They target the middle class population in India and they are a huge hit in Chennai.

And Saravana Stores was the inspiration for Kishore Biyani to launch the Big Bazzar chain of hyper malls...

There are 2 stores...One in Usman Road and another in Ranganathan Street,T.Nagar

I wouldn't go into one of those Saravana stores if someone pays me to! Back in 2000, on a few occasions, I nearly collapsed as I couldn't breath with all the dust kicked up by hoards of people going to Saravana stores in T Nagar! I couldn't get out either as there was no way to get out of there - bit like a really bad traffic jam - of human bodies! I have have nightmares about it since!

Also noticed some terrible stuff inside the store, a gang of shop workers beating up a ordinary looking guy, saying he was shop lifting or something?! Its a mad mad place!

True...You can get things cheaply but it wont be a very pleasant shopping experience..Saravana stores mainly targets lower middle class folks...So it is a tradeoff between money and such inconvenience.

How could Big Bazaar and Saravana stores provide goods at cheaper prices when compared to others ?

I always have suspected that the quality of the products in such malls would be a question.

They purchase in bulk from local vendors.Quality obviously won't be that high for few products but generally speaking its ok.People won't care if they purchase toothpaste from Big Bazar or nearby store.Quality will be same.Same is the case for clothes, food products. The only thing I don't like in BB is loud music with somebody screaming ' exciting offer of buy 2 get 1 free is going to end in next 20 minutes'

Quality is not always the same at local stores. For instance, I could find difference in the quality of a product that I bought from a local super market. The same product bought from an authorized store was of good quality. Price was the same..

You are very much right.

Goods which are branded, they are same everywhere (local shop or big bazar).

But goods that are not branded, first of all I dont think they are sold at lesser price, second quality is ALWAYS questionable.

Melamine tray(small) which I bought from Big Bazar at Rs 45/-, same tray was being sold in Amravathi at Rs 15/-.

I stop going Big Bazar. Neither I recommend anyone to go to Big Bazar kind of stores (Total etc..).
If they maintain quality and really it is cheaper (it could be) then only I will think of going back to BigBazar.

In that sense I found that Reliance Fresh is really cheaper and good quality wise. But still they are not completely in house hold items or other things other than vegetables.

In this same Banaglore, I used to buy all branded goods in price lesser than printed price. But my good Bangalore is ruined by western way of marketing.

I feel that if I feel shame to buy goods from road side shop then only I will go to Big Bazar, which I dont feel at all.

IMHO, Branded goods are fake in such shopping malls.

What I mean to say is that poor quality goods are manufactured or purchased and sold with brand names.

If we observe closely the logo of branded products in these malls, we are sure to find that the logo is a fake one.

Will such shopping malls dare to sell fake products at a very high price which has a risk of spoiling their reputation?
I don't think so!!
