Hi All,

I am curious to know the career growth after marriage.Now i am single i come to office at 8:30AM and leave at 10:30PM.I have been seeing people who are married come to office at 9 in the morning and leave at 6 in evening.

What is the best age for a guy to marry?
How many of you prefer marrying a lady working in Software firm?

Dude, working 14-hour days isn't a career path, it's a trail of tears. The only thing that path leads to is an early grave.

In addition, you'll often find that the best programmers are more efficient in their programming. Working 14 hour days does not necessarily make the best code.

Regardless fo martial status, consider optimizing the time you do spend at work. This way, you'll be able to have a comfortable down-time to recharge and be more productive all around.

In India, a bachelor can work for 14 hrs and could be happy and as productive as anyone working 8 hrs.

It may be cultural here for a bachelor to work long hours for various reasons.

AW best age to get married is when you think you want to get married

Indeed, that's the thing. A person working 14 hours a day is as productive as one working 8 hours a day.

In the US, it is also cultural for a bachelor to work long hours for various reasons. Some of those reasons are... Couldn't get a date. Friends were busy. The local sports bar was closed. Nothing good showing at the local theater. Etc...

Seriously, there are always reasons to work late, sometimes. Deadlines being one of them. But there should not be a reason to always work late.

More strongly, I don't believe that a professional developer can work 14 hour days for more than a week or two and keep up the productivity and quality. For a short term deadline, sure. For six months, not a prayer.

Look, its simple, unless its an arranged deal, it takes time to chase a woman and convince her to say "yes", so you can't be working 14 hours a day before you get married.

It my current job, as at my previous, we get yelled at if we spend too much time working. Our management knows that burning out developers is not a winning long-term strategy.

I wonder what is the quality of your work if you dont have enough rest. How about sleep and taking a bath?

And after marriage? Would it be fair to your wife if you go home only to sleep? You no longer handle yourself only, you have to think of your relationship too.

One thing wont change. You will still visit Javaranch.

Well, that's a whole 'nother problem. If you're bored and don't know what to do with yourself outside of work, then it's going to be hard to meet someone to marry -- and harder to have a successful marriage once you've found someone. You need some interests! Take up some sports, some hobbies -- no offense, but you need to get a life for yourself, first, before you try to create a family.

I wish my management was also like that. They are so miser at giving holidays (and also when you leave early, you can view strains on their foreheads), that sometimes I feel "What the f***". I am not the kind of a person who argues with someone. I have just made up my mind that I'll leave the company ASAP. Perhaps after that the management might realize their mistake...

That may not be a problem as most marriages in India are arranged . A typical marriage process in Java :

You should also add the following condition.

if(brideGroom.isSoftwareEngineer()) {
marry();
}

I will say I did see this when working with a team from <delete name just in case> Consulting in Bangalore. The team I worked with was made up of a majority of younger unmarried men and women.

It did seem there was an expectation that those younger members should work longer hours than their married colleagues. I thought that was a tad unfair and managed to come to a compromise with the management not to make 'my team' work any longer than 10 hour days.

I'd like to say I convinced them that the team would be fresher and make less mistakes but it could just have been that they were agreeing to what 'the client wanted' .
