hi all
I am in my final year of Computer Science Engineering and we need to do a project . Last year I developed a compiler front-end in C but this time I want to do something in java so that it would help me in the industry as well when I get out of college .
We need to do a project that has some research involved in it . I want something that would involve databases as well since I've never worked with the database . Can anyone suggest me something ? Or am i on the wrong forum ?
Thanking in anticipation . Vaib .

that's kind of broad question. it's similar to saying "I want to write a book. I want it to be fiction. What should I write?"

What kind of things interest you? Do you want to write a game? an inventory manager? how about a word processor/code editor? Maybe something that interacts with iTunes to help manage your music library?

you have cast your net over such a broad area, nobody is really sure how to help focus your search (ok, so i mixed my metaphor a little - sue me).

There are only two hard things in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors

You should do something that you are interested in, not what others tell you to do. You will have plenty of that to deal with when you get into the real world.

What do you like? Do something around that.

If you find it interesting and you are most likely to want to work on it.

Hi, don't know if you've already picked a project, but ..... How about a web site with a db backend. There's both your jsp/servets and I'd advise hibernate for db access.

If you've already chosen, what'd ye pick?

imho you could start with a project that demonstrates sort of 'proof of concept'.
Regarding modelling, if you cannot leverage hibernate, there are alternatives like jpa, or the very basic jdbc (although you could again use its newer variant)
and why just databases? You could use xml as persistent storage too!
I agree. Here's the link:
