I just started my job as Online Project Manager. I am little confuse about my role. I been told in the interview that i have to manage day-to-day tasks as well as projects.

I generally take the requirement, convert it into task. Neither i assign task to resource nor participate in mockup design as it is done by my our director. I generally go to programmer everyday morning and ask where are you at task. Most of the times they don't like if i keep asking same things(just update of task).
I am just confused whether i am doing right role or not.
Can you please tell me what online project manager should be doing? Can you also explain me how i get more control(assigning to task and participate in to design so that way programmer also feel that i am involved and they start respecting me)?

Thank You,
Angela

the best way to handle this situation is to arranage a status meeting. you can plan this meeting either everyday or every couple of days or even every week. during this meeting time you can get the status from all team members. this helps to develop good relationship among team members.

i am surprised that the director is assigning tasks, in fact project manager is responsible for assigning tasks and sometimes estimating the effort etc.

hope this helps.

Unforutnately, we can't. Your manager is the best person to ask. Since you just started shcedule a meeting and tell him you'd like some guidance on the role. Questions you would want answered include:

What information do I need to gather to give to you? to others?
What regular reporting do you and others need from me (daily, weekly, monthly, etc)?
What problems and warning signs should I be watching out for?
At what point should I raise an alarm?
In what ways can I be pro-active in this role?
What else should I be doing

You need to ask the director for this authority.

As for gaining respect, it's not clear to me that a project manager's role participates in design. It may or may not depending on the company. Even so, that may not get your respect.

The way to win the respect of your peers is not to do what you think you should be doing but to do the role they expect you to be doing and to meet their needs, doing so in a thorough and professional way.

Also, lot of time, director directly gives task to programmer without any notification to me. How can i resolve this so i can be aware of all task?

I think the same technique will work. Raise this concern with your boss, and either ask him to give you some of that authority or to keep you in the loop.

I am confused about my role as well, I have a job title as consultant but I am ordered to do everything from making tea, ordering lunch, vacumming the floor to developing software functionalities, fixing defects and work on PCRs. But I rarely do any technical consulting tasks and design works.

Does it concern you they hired a project manager who has no clue what to do, notwithstanding your close association with that person? Is should, and that should concern all of the stakeholders in the company.

Project management is a HUGE topic and it takes considerable practice to rise to become even mildly competent. I would start with some simple project management software (read: anything but that horrific Microsoft Project malware) or a good issue tracker (Atlassian JIRA) and use the documentation to learn the bare bones requirements for guiding a project through to completion.

My company is Advertising Media company(which has over 2 mill pages on the site):
They get requirement from advertisers
Convert requirement to task
Associate task to resources
Resource does task
Get in touch with editorial to get information.
QA Testing

When i was interviewed they told me that i will working with editorial and resources(IT team) to track task or updates the task.

I asked them if i get directly requirement from advertisers, covert to task and assign resources(which IT director doesn't prefer). So everyday i go and ask resources about Task. They tell me it will be done tomorrow(they don't discuss task in detail with me as they getting from director). So I that's why i am confused here...... Also, i do QA testing for major task.

I am PMP certified and know the role of PM but in this company can't figure it out.

Please help me out....

Thank You;
Angela

I did talk to head of department of the team i am handling. He told me that i just have to do only follow up on the task(which i have to go and ask only where you are at task). I don't need to participate in design, i don't need to assign task to resource. I don't need to get requirement from Advertisers.
LOOKS LIKE MY JOB IS ONLY PROJECT CORDINATOR THOUGH THEY GIVE ME TITLE "ONLINE PROJECT MANAGER"

Thanks,
Angela

My company is Online Media Advertising Agency where they don't have big project. They have one website where they have to update little tasks every week(task is requirement from advertisers) on site. Right now i put all task of the week in excel file. These tasks can be pushed next week. I am looking for some Project Mangement Tool where i can put all task, resource(assigned by director), multiple resources to each task. Do you know any cheaper tool as they don't want Microsoft Project application.

Thanks,
Angela

Consider yourself lucky.

You get one of those jobs where you don't actually have to do any real work. Just try and look like your busy.

I'm assuming that's sarcasm. Speaking for myself that job is my idea of hell.
