SCJP for Java 6 LearnKey cd

Hello all,

I'm sure some of my concerns have been addressed and I have skimmed some searches and FAQs.
I have been programming with Java now for almost a year. I have read 2 very large books on it.
Taken 3 classes and have recently completed the recommended book SCJP by by Sierra and Bates.

I'll admit I crammed this book in and did not take any notes but it left me feeling warm and fuzzy.
I worked all the self examination questions got 100% on almost all of them.
I then popped the cd in and took a look at the master exam.
Holy *&#@!
I am now terrified to take the exam.
On the disc there were questions with 50 lines of code on them.
Lots of "will not compile", or "cause run-time exception" questions.
And compound questions that went up to H! (8 options!).

I'm just wondering...
How realistic is this c.d.?

I read in the F.A.Q that the Moks are a little tougher.
I'm suddenly concerned seeing how $200 is not cheap at all in my book and tend to be a perfectionist.
I don't really believe in second attempts at a price that heavy.
How realistic is this thing?
Anybody here used this material and taken the SCJP with an open stance to share?

Yeah.
On the cd there is a master exam and a bonus master exam.
That thing is wicked.
I'm currently registered to take the SCJP SE version 6 certification in a little over a week.

Surely the maser exam is for some other certification?...
I hope.

It's kind of hard to figure out where you miss a precise question when they're 50 lines long.
If this is what the exam is going to be like then I'm going to need to start studying overtime and get a good grasp on astrology and superstition as well.

I have also given scjp 6.0, and all the master exams. It seems ok to me, why are you wondering so much, just one-two questions are long, and in real exam you will get 1-2 long questions also. But I do not think they are 50 lines long. Give it a tough fight.

Only 2?
I had at least 4 or so that I literally counted to be between 25 - 50 lines long.
Maybe it was my luck of the pre-exam draw.
I just attempted 30 of the 75 on the master exam once and got a 39%.
Glad I did too because the book and my previous knowledge was a grand misleading misconception for me.
I wasn't expecting this much ridiculous code.
I'm going to start working some more mocks till judgement day. (Being the exam of course.)
Thanks for the reply.
Glad it went well for you.

I had done lots of mocks, I had got 82% in master exam 1 and 86% in master exam 2, 88% in master exam 3. But I had done whizlabs before master exams 1 and 2, and Devaka examlab before master exam 3. So I had become used to such long questions.

I took the master exam yesterday and got 68%. Then I thought I would practice on the quiz, and each time I got around 60%. Suddenly, I felt sick about the long questions and start a new strategy and all of the sudden I was getting 87%!!!
Here is what I did:
1. If a long question appear, go directly to the answers without even look at the question.
2. Hope fully I will find a candidate answer as "Compilation error".
3. Start looking madly for possible places that might cause compilation errors.
4. Find a problem is the question code, and choose the "Compilation error" choice as your answer.

I guess our problem is that when take the exam, we unconsciously assumes the questions contain no syntax error, and dive directly into the logic. And the logic is usually twisted in a way to confuse us as much as possible, and eventually, we loose our patients and just randomly pick an answer and pray.

I personally disagree with this way of making test. But I guess this is Sun's intention to make sure programmers can at least write code to pass compiler's check before they can write anything meaningful.

Yes you are right Wei, I was also using this strategy, even I used this strategy in my real exam also and found lots of such code having compiler error.

This make me think about the law systems in different countries. In North America, one is "Innocent until proven guilty". In some other systems, one is "Guilty until proven innocent". I guess Sun's did not make SCJP to reflect the law system of the states.

lol
That's a good way of interpreting it.
I've never taken a certification nor do I know anybody that has so I'm really glad I tried the master exam on the cd.
I'm going to touch up on the book and start getting the feel for the pre-exams so I can find good tactics.
Thanks a lot for the good advice.
