As per the EJB3 spec, if a remote interface of the bean is being used then irrespective of whether the client is on the same JVM, the param and return types will be serialized.

can i use local in seperate ear under the same deploy (JVM)?
Does Jboss work here according to the spec? i am not sure that use remote in the same ear will return different instance in Jboss.
