Can I install unix on my desktop ? From where can I download unix or solaris ? Is it free ?

You could try OpenSolaris, it's free. You can install it on an Intel/AMD machine.

Do you really want Unix? Or do you want Unix or Linux.

There are zillions of linux distributions, and a fair number of free BSD unix systems

There are a lot of Linux distributions. The most popular ones are Ubuntu and Fedora. I use Ubuntu myself. See DistroWatch for information on different Linux distributions.

I want to get solaris. OpenSolaris, is that from Solaris or altogether a different flavor of Unix ? If I use OpenSolaris, will it provide basic working practice like on solaris ? Or is Linux close to Solaris to get hands on practice ?

I assume you mean Is OpenSolaris from Sun, just as Solaris is from Sun. The answer is yes.
Go to the Sun site and get it and read the documents.
