In the programming realm, I think Head First Design Patterns is destined to be a classic. (So many books, so few highlighters...)

I read that years ago and lost my copy. About all I can remember is a weapon called the orchid ... and some kinky sex. What the heck was it about?

I'm not sure that anyone -- perhaps even Delany -- knows for sure.

But I like the non-linear stream of consciousness style, the poetic imagery, and the apparent metafiction qualities. I think this was the first "experimental" novel I read (about 25 years ago), and the idea that it could be so engrossing without making absolute sense was intriguing to me.

Wow, its hard to narrow it down to a small list. Besides, my list probably changes every couple of months depending upon what I've read recently! I can't pick favourites, but here's a selection of some good books I've read recently.

Red Mars - Kim Stanley Robinson
    Dune - Frank Herbert
The Dispossessed - Ursula Le Guin
A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson
A Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking
Homage To Catalonia - George Orwell
