hi everyone,

At present i am working on an application in which we should provide an application of chat for the users who are online. can any one please guide me regarding this application. Like how to dvelop it and from where we can have a sample code for it..

So the client should be an applet? You also need a server; a servlet container like Tomcat would do, or you could create a standalone server application (especially if you aren't going to be using HTTP ).

You may want to familiarize yourself with socket communication. Or did you have other ideas about client/server communication?

yes i am using Tomcat server.
i jst want the chat application to be a part of the application just like the gmail chat ..
How i should start up.

Gmail chat doesn't use applets; it uses HTML and JavaScript. If that's what you want, start looking into AJAX and the JavaScript XMLHttpRequest object. The JavaScript FAQ has some links around that.
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
