I have just now started my preparation for the SCJA exam and am completely new to JAVA.

I installed the Jave Standard edition development Kit from the sun website, but i am not sure about setting up of the environment variable. Can someone please help me with that. I also tried searching the Java Ranch with few key words but could not get the details.

Also, i have the netbeans IDE installed in my laptop. But i thought that i can learn better without using the IDE.

Please help me with the installation and execution of java program on my laptop(Windows Vista Home premium, 32 bit OS).

I think you can google it very easy
Another, i suggest you use a text edit to program. not to use a IDE when you are a fresh man in any program language.

Read the JDK installation instructions.

Sun has a set of tutorials which is a very good place to start learning Java.
