Can anyone please let me know how the XML files are useful while server side programming.
Who reads the information from a xml file.. web server? In any case, how it is related to web servers?
is there any standard format?

Back in the early days of servlets, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, all sorts of schemes were used to define server properties. I recall with distaste the endless "properties" files that JRUN used.

Fortunately, we now have the well defined deployment descriptor in web.xml. See this Sun page for links to the APIs.

XML has a number of advantages for this sort of thing.
