Check it out: Ol' Johnny Dunn is riding 585 miles in 7 days from San Francisco to Los Angeles, to raise money for AIDS. If anyone is interested, here is the link...

I'd rather see him raise money AGAINST AIDS
Or against a more pressing threat, like the common cold or tuberculosis (both of which get hardly any funding ever yet kill a lot more people).

The economic damages due to the common cold (and especially it's more dangerous and rather deadly brother, the flu) are far larger than those of AIDS.
Thousands die each year from the flu in the US alone. And I'm not talking of birdflu here, which is a miniscule threat, but regular flu which most people think is a few days in bed with chickensoup and a bottle of water.

common cold != influenza

From a personal viewpoint, I think raising money to fight AIDS is a fine thing to do. I've lost more than few friends and aquaintances to the scourge of AIDS, but not to the flu.

There's a cold remedy sold in the UK with a jingle "Suck 'em and see". I used to think they were describing a chemical ingredient - something like "Succamen C".

I could never believe that people die because of flu .. until today. One of my colleagues in office actually died in last week. He was on sick leave for few days because of flu and he never came back. He was living alone and when company HR couldn't get hold of him they informed police suspecting something bad had happened.. the police found him dead in his apartment. Shocking.. I just came to know about this ..he was just 35.

How can a person die because of flu ? :-(

Wow Joroen... couldn't you wait until AFTER my ride to start that kind of argument?? Don't be such a killjoy.

I'll say this, if one has never participated in a charity event, then I strongly recommend it. You'll be surprised that it can be quite enjoyable. There will be a lot of love and energy from all the people so focused and/or desperate for a real success. I think you will capture some of that energy by simply being in the locale.

As for an AIDS-related event, well... it is very obvious that not as many folks are interested in donating. I raised 5K a couple of years ago for cancer, and I did it in a snap. But this is very different, I can really sense the lack of interest. I suppose most folks can't relate to AIDS, and I bet some of that is because people with AIDS suffer alone, and die alone - (for the most part) - so maybe folks can't relate to it. But I also fear that it may be a sign of a subtle lack of acceptance of the gay community.

Rohan,

Was your friend in India or in US...In India I have never heard of anyone dying due to flue...May be it could be a deadly variant of common cold specific to some geography....

John, it's not that people can't relate to it so much as that people are suffering from charity overload.
They're constantly being bombarded by a neverending stream of people asking for their money for this charity or that, to the effect that they're no longer paying attention (or have already filled their budget).

Some time ago I decided to add up the amounts asked for (sometimes strongly enough that it was really a demand) by charities during a single day.
Just that one day (and I counted each organisation only once, most tried to reach me through multiple channels) would have cost me several hundred Euro had I given just that minimum amount to each of them.

Combine that with the regular reports of fraud and waste in charities ("factfinding tours" to Cancun resorts and "conferences" in Rio about starvation in Africa for example, no visible effect of donations except for African dictators buying new business jets, or the US Red Cross spending tens of millions out of the donations for 9/11 victims to build themselves a new headquarters building) which lead people to seriously question what good those donations actually do except line the pockets of people that money was never intended for.

It probably started about 10 years ago. TV images of skinny black children had been shown to bring in a lot of money, so everyone started throwing them around to the effect that people just started filtering them out mentally.
It's the same now with AIDS. There have been so many things raising money for AIDS research and to "give medication to poor African people" that people are filtering that out as well.

Nothing wrong with trying, but people are tired of spending and spending to little or no effect especially when their governments are already donating massive amounts out of their taxes to those same organisations.

About 50-100 million died in the outbreak of 1918/1919, among them an estimated 5% of the population of India according to Wikipedia. It was a true pandemic which struck around the world, so I don't think any particular region is safe (witness the spread of avian flu today).

Yeah. It really annoys me when people are feeling a bit ill, with cold-like symptoms, and then complain about having flu. If they did, they'd probably be in bed for a week rather then up and about complaining about it. Its a bit like when people say they have a migraine whenever they have a headache - attention seeking!

[Jeroen]: John, it's not that people can't relate to it so much as that people are suffering from charity overload.

OK, but look again at the very first post in this thread. Sure, it's amusing that he accidentally said "for AIDS" when of course he meant "against AIDS". But I'm thinking of the next phrase: "if you are interested...". If you're not interested, you're welcome to just skip the thread. No one's making you read it. This is hardly a case of pestering us for money. And I think the person making the effort to bike 585 miles should get to choose which particular charity he's supporting. If you want to do something to support a different charity, great - but could you maybe discuss it in a different thread, rather than undermine the John's? Yeesh...

Thanks, Jim. I must add that I waited until I was nearly done collecting my goal before putting the offer out there on the ranch. Some people want to contribute, some want to know about these events...

IMHO it is good to spread the word of these events. If someone else does the event next year than that's an additional $2500 raised, etc, etc.

[next section is intended to have an easy-going, non-abrasive attitude!!]
Joroen, as for the difficulty of raising AIDS funds, I was comparing to the groups I typically hit up - relative to my circles. (So all the junk mail and infomericals are probably a moot point.) It would be hard for me not to notice the difference. I pointed this out to my buddies, b/c I'm sure they'd find it as interesting as I did.

You know I do a lot of these charities, and the going attitude seems to be, "what are you going to do next year?". I think my buddies enjoy seeing a challenge conquered. It makes that challenge available for all the others too. I think they also like to see me squirm under the pressure and realization that if I fail, they will give my endless grief. :-) So one could say that they are paying for an opportunity to bust my chops, but at the same time they are giving me an out. I guess that is where the charity is...

As for the money, I bet they'dgive a little to any and everything I did, as I would for them. We have no problem throwing tons of money on a bar, so a few bucks to a charity, is really nothing. ;-)

That tragedy was caused because of I think Influenza. And here I was talking about a common flu.. infact I remember when I was a kid, I used to look forward to (!!) falling sick because of flu.. 'cause then mom would take a leave from office, I would be pampered like anything and if I will also be allowed to bunk school :-)
Influenza outbreak can be pretty serious no argument there.. am just sad and wondering how common flu can be life threatening...

Rohan, what most people call "flu" isn't, it's a bad cold.
If you've got the flu (that's indeed influenza) you're too sick to do anything.
