I'm on 1.5.0_16 and I just ran into a nasty, known bug. Can I upgrade my Java version without upgrading my OS version? (I've got a MBP core 2 duo).

The Java version from Apple won't run on 10.4, but Soylatte does: http://landonf.bikemonkey.org/static/soylatte/
I have no experience of how well it works, though.

We've been on 6 for some time now for up-to-date OS and systems.

They upgraded to 6 a long time ago. Looking on my Leopard machine I see:

It is worth noting that the "1.6.0" has nothing to do with the bug fixes - the 1.6 equates to Sun's 1.6, but the .0 is Apple's internal numbering - I would guess that it indicates changes in functionality as far as Apple are concerned. But I do see regular updates to my Java version through the automatic updates. If I run the "java -version" command I get:

Anyway, 1.6 was available for registered developers (free registration) for Tiger, but I believe they pulled that shortly before Leopard was released - I cant confirm that it is unavailable as I don't have access to Tiger anymore. Since Leopard has been out since June 2007 that would mean that 1.6 has been available for OS/X for around 2 years now.

Regards, Andrew

Just to be exact, Java 6 for OS X wasn't released along with 10.5; it came almost a year later. But still, that was more than 10 months ago.
