Because the thread was moved to the trash can, where only moderators can go.

I'm sure somebody did have a reason, but I don't know what it is.

The update from Jesper was related to why the topic was moved to the trash -- it was not related to the topic itself. So, you didn't miss anything important.

Hi,

I just got the same from this link after receiving an email asking me to check it... Offending Article.

Not that I am particularly interested in this article or it's reasons for removal, it did take me a little while to work out what had happened.
Perhaps a page a little more graceful than "Oooops. You don't have sufficient privileges to access this message" can be used?
Currently, it implies that I have done something wrong when I was trying to help the original poster.

Thanks,

MG

The right thing to do would be not to send notifications to anyone who can't access the topic. I've added that to our internal TODO list.

Hi Ulf,

Thanks for your reply.

I agree, although I'm not sure how this is currently working.

It could be...
1) moving of the thread to the bin causes an email update - that's bad. You don't want watchers emailed for this reason.
2) thread in the bin being updated alerts watchers who can't view the bin - that's bad. We're being told about things we can't access.
3) delayed access. Thread is in real world at 12pm. Update happens at 1pm triggering email. 2pm thread moved to bin. 3pm I check mail and try to access and am told my privilges aren't in order.

I think you're right for 1&2, and we need a better page for 3.

Hope that helps,

MG

No, that's not the case - moving a topic doesn't cause an email to be sent.
2) thread in the bin being updated alerts watchers who can't view the bin - that's bad. We're being told about things we can't access.

That was the case until today's deployment. But now, if a topic in the Trash is updated, only those folks who can access it are notified (meaning JavaRanch moderators).
3) delayed access. Thread is in real world at 12pm. Update happens at 1pm triggering email. 2pm thread moved to bin. 3pm I check mail and try to access and am told my privilges aren't in order.

That's still an issue, but I'm not sure it's worth addressing. The message is essentially correct, although not very satisfactory. But not that many topics are trashed, so I think this is acceptable.
