Sure, reading certifiable when it says certified is quite normal

I don't count certifications, don't care much for them anyway (which might be why I am so slow in completing them, I constantly get sidetracked into other things like jobs).

I'm certified as disqualified from military service.
I'm a certified driver.
I'm a certified bachelor in engineering physics.
I'm a certified Java programmer.
Some might say I'm certifiable
I've a lot of certificates for completed professional training, probably a dozen or more, which anyone taking courses gets for just being there every day of the course.

You are not. I have more than you and there are lot of guys more than me. I think Nick Cheung has the most number of certificates.

That's catchy Dave. You should set it to music. Maybe "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"?

I considered going for a certificate a while back, but from what I've read on here they seem not to be particularly effective in improving the employability of a person, except perhaps in India where they seem to be status symbols.

It got me thinking about other certificates. Just how useful are they? My degree is now probably worthless - future employers will look at my experience rather then my qualifications. Any pre-university qualifications are even more ignored, but were useful at the time to get me into university.

I have a cycling proficiency certificate, but haven't touched a bike in about seven years, so would probably fall off it rather then ride well. I have a driving license, but haven't driven a car in two years - things like my reaction times and parking skills are probably worse then someone who hasn't passed yet! I have some trampolining badges which are similarly outdated.

In each of these cases, the certificates where useful at the time (and I learnt some important stuff while studying them), but are now most likely no good reflection of my skill in the area they cover. Experience seems more important. I wonder how long the Java certificates remain a good indication of skill.

Definately, Experience is more important than Certifications.

But by preparing and passing certs you cover alot of ground in short time. It shows that you know something well enough as required by the product Vendor.

I dont understand why people think certificates have value in India. It is valuable only to the H1-B recruiters.

Nowadays you can read the dumps and become certified.

Someone told me that some exam-centers takes extra money and give exams on your behalf.

But we should respect to those people who are really working hard to get certified.

Clearly I'm making a large uninformed and ignorant generalisation here, but it seems that 99% of people talking about certifications have Indian looking names. Perhaps what I should have said is "except perhaps for Indians" rather then "except perhaps in India".

I can try..
Certified Sewing Machine User (im not kidding.. we get this in 4th grade)
Certified Bicyclist
Certified Autocyclist
Certified Driver
Certified Scuba Diver

oh.. and now that I think about it, I got a load of certifications while
I was a boyscout: knife certificate, knot certificate, fire maker certificate,
axe certificate.. phew! it looks as if im winning.

Im also a certified Computer Scientist, but I think that certificating is
overrated compared to the above mentioned certifications
