Tiles problem: left menu area is not growing in length as the number of content lines grows

I am trying to fix a JSP that is using Tiles for layout. The left navigation menu's height seems to be fixed but I need it to be dynamic. The text that can appear on it represents rows from a data base. The amount rows can grow to be a fairly large number and I need the left menu to grow in height. I have tried not specifying any height and specifying in a CSS rule:

height: auto;

but this does not fix the problem. The only thing I have been able to do is to give the div in question a fixed height of 500px. I am using IE to develop with.

Any ideas how to make the height change dynamically?

Thanks.

This is a CSS, not Struts, issue.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
