Although various perks are involved for moderators, there is no monetary compensation; we're all volunteers. There's also no physical office - everything is done remotely (from all around the world, actually).

"Author" is an honorary title for people who pass what we call "the Amazon test". I'll let you figure out what that means :-)

Some explanations can also be found in http://faq.javaranch.com/java/SaloonTitles

Ulf, if there's no physical office, where's the JavaRanch server located on?

At a hosting company -- a "colocation facility."

Thanks.

I have another question. May be this question is not appropriate in this "Ranch Office" forum. But let me ask it.

Since the JavaRanch is hosted on a separate hosting company, how do you do the site maintenance? I mean, how do you stop the server, modify the content, and so on....? Do they provide you a separate web page which can be used for those purposes? Or, do you have a remote software which is provided by them? Please let me know. Just interest to know about how a hosting company offer these services.

Hosting companies generally offer web-based management software in addition to FTP and SSH access.

Our hosting company (Evolution Hosting, yo!) provides an excellent custom web-based application for uploading and modifying content, starting and stopping servers, etc. The friendly Evolution Hosting staff is also always just a phone call away if something goes wrong or needs a little extra attention. Since we own our own servers, a few of us have shell access for when things really need to be pulled apart.

Oh! This is what I really expected.

Ernest, if you don't mind, can you please show me a screen shot of that control panel? (Even here, or in a PM). Because I really interested on that nowadays.

The website that EFH posted, provides a working demo -- better than just a static screenshot.

Now, JavaRanch is using the Java technology on the JForum open source software.
