Nope. The non-moderator with the most posts is Stan James, may he rest in peace. The person in second place hasn't posted in a few months, but is thousands of posts ahead of Jothi.

On a related note - Ulf: I don't think I congratulated you on passing 20K.

For the curious, the top moderators are: Bear 29K, Ulf 20K and Ernest 19.5K. A very impressive feat given that it's all content (not fluffy posts.) It's easier to look this up than for non-moderators so I stopped here.

I'm here at Javaranch since 4 months ago.

4 months --> 520 posts
1 year --> 1560 posts

20 years --> 31200

Oh! I've to wait for another 20 years to pass Bear.

Here's the distribution of post count for the top 100 posters. You can see how rarified it it in the upper tiers. There are only 17 people altogether over 10000, just two over 20K, and just Bear near 30K.

I observed(sub-conciously!?) the count of Ulf's posts for some days and he had posted around 70-80 messages in couple of days, in various forums!
The depth and breadth of knowledge, the non-tiring character of ranchers, the effort you guys put to maintain the quality of the forum and the effort to help others learn here is amazing. Thank you!

TC :there is a thread in MD(know your fellow ranchers) which I started for exactly such questions!

Jeanne, your rate is very high too, I expect you will pass me very soon (You already have, I thought I had hit 14k already, I am really slowing down). And can catch up to Ulf, and EHF. I doubt anyone gets close to Bear at any time.

Although, did you hack your post count when working on the forum software. ;) JK

There was a lot of that back when we tried Jive and mvnforum -- posts counts of a million, and special titles like "Omniscient One" and "Iluvatar".

Quite possibly you did pass 14k, on the old system. I'm certain that EFH and Ulf had already passed 20k, prior to the switchover. I think the new system counts posts a bit differently. Perhaps this relates to posts that were edited, moved, or deleted. Oh well; no biggie.

I think there's something a bit backwards about the premise of this thread. I think people like Stan, Bear, Ulf, EFH, and others are great posters because they are (or were) extremely knowledgeable and helpful, and tremendously generous with their time. Having a high post count is a side effect of that, not an admirable end in itself. People may have high post counts because they are top posters, but they shouldn't be top posters because they have high post counts.

I got that the first time, thanks. But I believe I addressed this in my next-to-last post - the one you (partially) quoted. Read the rest of it. You can't pass Bear, unless he gets a life, and therefore stops posting as often.

Correct. We also didn't migrate closed forums or the Urgent (April Fools Day) forum.

Mike Simmons wrote:I think there's something a bit backwards about the premise of this thread.

Absolutely. Being helpful and knowledgeable over a long period of time makes it easy for these guys to have high post counts. Just posting a ton in MD may give a high post count, but it's not as interesting to me.

Mark Spritzler wrote:Although, did you hack your post count when working on the forum software

Nope . In fact I wrote a stored procedure to make sure everyone's post count equaled their actual number of posts. That way the new system would be consistent with itself.

Mark Spritzler wrote:Jeanne, your rate is very high too

I give in. You got me curious enough to calculate mine.
I've been a member since May 2003. That's 7 months in 2003, 12 in 2004-2008 and 2.5 in 2009. Giving me a total of 69.5 months. Dividing that by my current post count of 13,904 gives me just over 200 posts/month. Sounds reasonable - nowhere near Bear - does that mean I have a life?

Feh. There are other ways. We just need to get him hooked on something else geeky, like watching old Dr. Who episodes on DVD, or playing Evercrack.

Eh - he's already addicted to plenty of geeky things like that. Anime and Star Trek, mostly. I don't remember if he's ever commented on Doctor Who. I think our odds are best if we stick to known addictions. Let's see...

Hey, Sensei Bear: I heard that the Farscape Starburst editions had some scenes that were different from the original ADV Films releases. Can you comment on this? What, exactly, is different?

(with luck, that will keep him busy for a few days, at least...)

EFH -

If I'm understanding you correctly, and if I'm understanding your cool graph correctly (for instance I'm assuming the x-axis is linear), then it looks like ~2500 posts gets you into the top 100, and if you have ~7500 posts you're about in the top 25?

Cool bananas!

So it means, it is not that you must have post counts larger than ranch hands. All you need is a brain to clear those doubts posted by the greenhorns and ranch hands.

No offense meant to ranch hands

Of the currently active moderators, I think 835 posts is the lowest (which is a good deal less than Martijn has). If we include former moderators, it could be as little as 106 posts; I'm not sure about that - it was way before my time.

Well, think back to when JavaRanch was just starting out. The pool of people to choose from was smaller, and the length of time they could possibly have been at the Ranch was shorter.

At the risk of losing some Sci-Fi cred, I must admit that I have not gotten around to working through the Farscape DVD set.

But I am looking forward to the next season of the Doctor!
