You would use the javax.net.ssl.HttpsURLConnection class, not java.net.HttpURLConnection.

Which means using https as the URL protocol, not http.

A bit more, unless the server certificate is part of the client's truststore already. But you can turn off certificate validation. See e499 and e502 in http://www.exampledepot.com/egs/javax.net.ssl/pkg.html for more details.

Are you sure POST is the right method to use? For accessing a page, GET seems likelier.

the page specified is the target of a form action for a login form so it's post ..

here thats the original tag

OK, but if it's part of a form then there should be other parameters, like username and password, no? The code you posted doesn't send those, which might well explain the server error.

i thought that w/o sending parameters there would be a generated error message for the user and no server error ....

how would i write post data ... same as i would with a regular http post request using outputstream ?

That particular error you’re getting is because that is, in fact, an invalid HTTP 1.1 request. I strongly recommend using a tested client API instead of trying to do HTTP yourself, like URL.openConnection() or the Jakarta Commons HttpClient.

There is a quite a lot to do to implement HTTP 1.1 POST correctly, like including the correct Host, Connection, Date, Content-Type and Content-Length headers, encoding the query parameters, handling chunked encoding in replies that the one you included, etc. The HttpClient PostMethod will do all this for you.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
