You can buy it through agent. You can see past record on moneycontrol.com or any other financial website. You can track your fund online. They will provide you with the username and password.

You can buy directly also. But if you want 2 or 3 MFs from 3 companies it is difficult to go each and every company. Agent should help you to buy any MFs and good thing is he wont charge anything from you. For SIP look at: http://in.rediff.com/getahead/2006/jul/26sip.htm

SIP means Systematic Investment Plan, you declare a particular amount and date on which your declared amount will be deducted from your account and invested into the scheme you decided. Whatever date you have decided, on current price (NAV) of that day will be applicable for that month's investment. It is called SIP because you are averaging your investment, sometime you will get more units (NAV is low) and some time less (NAV is more). HTH.

All tax saving mutual funds (ELSS) comes with the locking period of 3 years minimum. So you will not get tax benefits if you will go for 1 or 1.5 years' scheme. Some good and prestigious MF providers are: 1. SBI 2. Franklin 3. Reliance 4. HDFC 5. ICICI But do your research before investing because Mutual Funds are subject to market risk.

Why not? MFs need not to invest in only share market, they can invest in both shares and other income options. [ September 05, 2006: Message edited by: KJ Reddy ]
