I agree. Smoking is not good for health, nobody should smoke be it children, adults, women, old, dead people..nobody should smoke.

But in this world there are lot of things one should not do like:
Coveting your neighbours wife, jumping from 5 storeyed building, telling lies, swearing at elders, avoiding work, drinking alcohol..etc etc

But we all do...

It's not that I don't understand the temptation of vices, but I just don't get the allure of smoking. Drinking puts you in an altered state where problems seem minimized, inhibitions are reduced, and your perceived attraction to the opposite sex is increased. Drugs have similar advantages. Gambling lets you dream of easy wealth, and very occasionally provides it. Womanizing, well, it has its own set of bonuses.

Smoking gives you nothing. It's unpleasant, makes you smell, gives you all kinds of diseases, can make men impotent, reduces senses of taste and smell, increases the risk of lighting yourself on fire. It's vice just for the sake of vice. Jumping off the five story building would be more attractive to me. Hmm, there's one of those right down the street. Maybe I could get some friends together and ...

Bert, maybe you can tell me. Since the JavaRanch server is hosted in Colorado, aren't we required by law to escort these smelly-breathed folks to a separate facility of some sort? Ultimately all of JavaRanch runs on a single server, so without a separate ventilation system for a second server we really have no choice but to evict these people entirely, isn't that right? Can't have them encroaching on our clean air after all.

It seems to me as if most smokers only smoke to get rid of the nasty symptoms they have from not having had a cigarette in a while. So why do they start in the first place?

I suspect that many smokers start because of peer pressure when they are young. For some strange reason many teenagers seem to think smoking is cool, so many people have their first cigarette just to fit in with the crowd. Then they're stuck as the addiction kicks in.

If cigarettes were only just invented, its likely that they would be banned as a dangerous drug. Its probably only historical reasons which mean we see them as being more socially acceptable then other drugs. Perhaps the same applies to beer.

On the other hand, opinions on smoking can vary largely between cultures. In the UK we now have laws banning smoking in most work places, and hopefully soon in pubs and other buildings used by the public. In contrast to this, I recently went to Greece (the most smokers as a percentage of the population in the EU) and it is common to see people smoking in offices. Quite often I'm sure they aren't even convinced that its unhealthy.

I can't wait. Its so annoying to come back from the pub and have to wash all my clothes because they stink of smoke. The sooner smoking is also banned at bus stops, railway platforms and restaurants the better as well.

One day we'll look back and wonder why on earth we put up with smoking in pubs in the same way as it would now seem strange to work in an office with people smoking in it. Hopefully.
