I think General Computing is the forum you want, unless you want a lot of useless answers.
I've looked at Dell Outlet in the past. I was unimpressed with the price of their off-lease systems compared with what one could get new, so I did not follow through.

As Joe already pointed it out, putting this in the Meaningless Drivel would mean two things
1.meaningless answers not necessarily satisfying your question.
2.deletion of the thread from the forum, since it is not meaningless nor drivel. :)

So I guess less response is better than no response at all.

From what I've gathered about Vista, one of the main problems was OEM's marking computers "Vista Ready" when the hardware wasn't really up to the task, not to mention drivers were few and far between in the early days. I don't think Vista will be much of a problem on current hardware, with plenty of memory (2 gig+) and the most recent service pack. My employer is still on XP, so that's what I have the most experience with.
I'm a fan of Linux, but I've never installed it on a laptop. You'd best browse Linux on Laptops and the Ubuntu Forums to see if anyone has had problems with your chosen platform.

That system looks pretty decent except for the graphics card: "Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100". Don't plan on gaming with that bad boy.

I don't know if you are still looking around for a computer or if you're set on a dell but about 2 months ago I bought a HP pavilion dv7-1275dx for about 1k. It's a pretty big laptop so I don't know if you are looking for something primarily portable. I've loved it so far though.

Dual boot usually isn't a problem. Getting all the hardware to behave, especially networking and modems, is where things can get ugly.
That said, the Linux for Laptops site seems to get good results installing various Linux distros on the 1525.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
