is there a way to restart my java application from error recovery.

when there is error, i want to prompt the user to restart the application. but how can i make the java application restart?

Why does the app need to be restarted? What kind of error is this that can't be recovered from while the app is running?

You can create a starter application which has only two task. Starts your application and restarts it whenever it exit with some error code.
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
