For SCDJWS 5 the passing score is 42% and number of question is 65.
Here is my story :
Let me fist shamelessly defend my 60% : 1. My voucher was getting expired on 2nd April so I had no other choice but to write the exam. 2. I was ready to fail instead of writing the older version.
3. The actual reason, I was very very lazy to study. 4. I prepared for 9 days to write this exam. I had the ample time but as you know my laziness.
5. Didn't get time for any mock exam or even to revise my own notes.
About "MY" exam : 1. Exam was tough. Very confusing.
2. 80% Theory. 10% XML,SOAP,WSDL etc.. tags, 10% sample code and missing code snippets.
3. No questions that points to the new features in SOAP1.2. All NS URIs were point to SOAP1.1
4. No questions from WSDL component model (WSDL2.0)
5. Questions from both BP1.0a and BP1.1. Be thorough in this, I just gave 1 reading of BP 1.1 and that costed me alot.
6. Read BP1.1 for XML, SOAP (even if it is not mentioned in the Objectives) and WSDL.
7. Make sure you understand and remember what point are MUST HAVE and what point are SHOULD HAVE from BP 1.1
8. Make sure you exactly understand diff security concepts (WS-Security, SAML, XKMS, etc..) and especially their uses cases.
9. Read more on use cases of JSON and REST. They try to mix SOAP and JSON/REST in use cases.
10. Make sure what APIs support both REST and SOAP and how to use them (the diff methods).
11. Read everything about .NET, visual studio, its tools, clients, uses cases etc..from the WSIT tuorial. Don't miss anything.
12. Read about caching pattern and where the caching happens (Client/Server) etc..
Let me know if you want to ask anything about any specific objective or chapter.
All the above details are specific to my exam. It can be different for your exam.
I just hope that what I've in my hand is correct.
I wrote the exam today itself and got the Score Report which says that the passing score is 42% and this is the first time I am writing SCDJWS 5 (No previous versions).
So this is not upgrade.
To me it looks more like the site needs an update. I hope they don't fail me after reading this post.
That's a great news Deepak. In fact I have to appear for this but 68% bar looks quite high.
If they are lazy enough to update site then there is no chance they will take pain to revise your result.
Another thought comes to like this may be like a promotion of new product or rebet for course changes.
Anyways GO FOR BEER Man.
Rite, it's true, 42% is passing score of SCDJWS 5. I wrote exam today and was very surprising when saw this score. This new exam has lost of question theory , WSIT and Basic Profile 1.1. I didn't see any drag-drop question. A few of these question is code snippet, but most of these are related to use cases and XML security. My score is 62%, what a shame but it's true, man
For SCJP and WCD i waited for the voucher rates to fall.
After studying this DJ exam the outlook has changed.
Now m waiting for the passing marks to fall.
Please tell me if it goes below 42
I have been studying WSIT.
Every tutorial pointed is so cute.
It finishes after reading it with good concentration.
But i don't understand what will the exam ask on this?
Passed SCDJWS 5 with 54% (04/11/09). (Pass score is 42%)
I had used JAX-WS on couple of projects and was looking to clear SCDJWS 5 certification, initially i was little upset to see vast topics covered by this certification.
I set 40hrs of preperation aside for first attemp since i had retake vouchure.
When i saw the questions on the exam i was upset since Sun certification are not dumb like Brainbench, almost every question is comparative, meaning just knowing jax-ws, Rest is not enough thorough understanding of both and when to use one is required.
Anyways guys 40hrs are not good if someone have not used 90% of the topics earlier, so i would suggest focus on details

What's about SOAP version ? Is it really 1.2 as specified in objectives to cx-310-230 ?
I tried free ePractice SCDJWS 5 exam from Sun and noticed fun thing in question's objective
related to SOAP - "Section 2: SOAP 1.1 and 1.2 Web Services Standards > Objective 2.1 > Question 1".
Seems we have to learn both

Mikalai, I found your scdjws guide for v5, which includes things related to soap v1.1.
Is it your assumption or experience after successful pass scdjws v5 ?

Hi Alex,
Well, since there was not official word from Sun on this contradiction, I based my WSD 5 notes on:
a) my own experience
b) another production test taker's experience:
No questions on WSDL 2.0 and No specific questions on SOAP 1.2
Atleast not in my exam. But You need to read both BP1.0 and 1.1 there were some questions from that.

Well, if there is nothing about WSDL 2 in the exam, then how to explain this objective from section 3:
Describe the Component Model of WSDL including Descriptions, Interfaces, Bindings, Services and Endpoints.
I have not found anything in the WSDL 1 specifications saying anything about the above, while the WSDL 2 specifications indeed speak of a component model and the above mentioned parts of it.
The material is already quite vast, unclear objectives does not exactly make it easier.
Regarding the WS-I Basic Profile: The BP 1.1 is a superset of the BP 1.0, so I see little use in studying both. I also fail to see the rationale in knowing whether some recommendation originates from the older or the newer version of the recommendation. If someone can enlighten me in this area, please do!
Best regards.

Agree. Another example - despite of our assumtion about SOAP v1.1, second objective of Section 2
is: "SOAP Processing and Extensibility Model.". Which is definitely reflects the structure
of SOAP v1.2 spec.

Hi All,
Although i have posted this as a new topic but i thought this would be a right place where i can get answers to my question, so expecting earnest replies from your side
"Hi All,
I am new to this excellent forum for java professionals and want to take SCDJWS exam soon. I read from somewhere 1.5 months back that Web Services by RMH is a good book to start preparation.I issued that book from library and read till JAXP. Iwas aiming for the latest version of exam which is 1.5.Later on i came to know from some place that whole JAX-RPC is not a part of 1.5!!!!!
Now i am starting to study JAX-WS instead but scared this time if i might read some trivial stuff again not related to exam Also, i am not sure to what extent should i study as there are some topics like UDDI and JAXR are quite complicated to understand.
Can anyone please explain the topics which should be given more focus and list out trivial contents which i should avoid to study. I have read Kathy-Sierra for SCWCD and SCJP6 by TMH for SCJP exam and found to be extremely useful w.r.t exam preparation as they clearly list out non-important topics and their focus is always on the core stuff. But unfortunately there is no book like that in market at present.
Also should i focus on code snippets(they are really very complex and it requires memorizing a huge list of APIs and their methods?....Is it necessary to remember all the APIs used in the code snippets of RMH?

Hi, Narahari,
Using [ILLEGALLY COPIED MATERIAL] (real questions from professional tests) is discouraged at JavaRanch. This site for those who uses brains to pass exams.
best regards,
MZ

This is an old version and I recommend you to download the latest version either here on JavaRanch or at the other link I have provided in the forum.
Best wishes!
Hi MZ,
Thanks, I agree with you. But i need to to finish it by this month end. It is urgent requirement in my company, it does not mean that i do not want to use brain. Anyway thanks for your suggestion and motivation, i will go through the study guide and i will write the exam.
Does the SCDJWS 5 exam question contain check boxes irrespective of whether we have to choose 1 or many..?
Will there be any prompt near the question as such ..choose 2 options..etc

Good. Because your company most likely not only expects you to pass the exam, they also expect you to be honest and know what you are doing in your job, instead of blindly copying the answers to the questions of the exam.
