Let's have some noise, folks!
Not trying to turn this into Meaningless Drivel or anything...
What's everybody up to, aside from JavaRanch assignments (which I can figure out from the log)?
Me, I'm thrilled that we're finally getting some more SNOW here in southern Michigan. Only been X-C skiing once this season so far. Pathetic. (Yeah, I know I've got to go up north, but I haven't had the extra time.)
Getting slides ready for a conference presentation coming up in March (PeopleSoft stuff, no Java). This is my first time presenting at a professional conference, so I'm pretty excited.
I'm partway through Design Patterns Explained. This is one very good book and I highly recommend it. It really puts some pieces together for me. I like that the authors talk about mistakes they've made and various false starts and what they've learned from them.
Going to a Laurie Anderson concert this weekend. She's cool to see in person.

What have I been up to? Well, here goes:
  • Looking for a house and putting together the FHA loan.
  • Grad school, OOAD classes
  • Reading Design Patterns, also
  • Reading Core Servlets and JSP
  • Writing Java code
  • Working *blech!*

  • Have had some very nice snows here in Colorado, but haven't made it up to the mountains once. My skiis are screaming to get out!
Went to the backwoods of Oklahoma and had squirrel for the first time, very interesting. Quite a relaxing time, though. Was nice to get away.
My friends from the UP are moving back to Denver, so that's cool, get to play Euchre, Hearts, all sorts of card games just about every night now!
    That's about all, really
    Jason
p.s. What type of music does Laurie do? Website is rather uninformative about her "style", though I do like the graphics.

You've heard her I'm sure of it, you just didn't know it was her singing/saying: "Language. It's a virus. oooooooo." Her style is, well, it's Laurie Anderson.
Would actually make a great sound track to JavaRanch, there's an idea for some "noise" around here.
We've only had enough snow for one XC ski day too. But the weather's so wacky that it was warm enough to ride my bike home from work the other day.
I've been getting up to speed at my new job, reading about and playing with Flash and elearning.
Good luck with your presentation Mike. What are you going to talk about? (I've heard of people who are soft but not about SoftPeople.)
    Jason what's the UP?

Ok, have no idea what that song is. I'm fairly well versed in country, late 70's and early 80's punk (when "alternative" wasn't mainstream), rock, even classical. From the website, sounds like she does show-tunes.
UP is Upper Peninsula, of Michigan. UPers think the people from lower Michigan are silly, and vice versa (generally). Kind of like people from Dallas and Houston. Dallas people are snobs, Houston people are hicks... and I take exception to term "Ugly Texan". It ain't the best state, but at least the people are friendly and go out of their way to say howdy. Of course now that I live in Denver, could get shot for saying that.
How big is the conference Mike? Is it all stuffed shirts or can you be relaxed and put some humor into it? Something like "Why did the static method cross the street...?"
By the way, nice idea to try and get people around here conversing. The Cattle Drive is its own little microcosm in this vast, undulating blob that is the JavaRanch, we need to keep that community spirit up.

I've heard of PeopleSoft before, but I'm still not clear even after perusing their web site exactly what the software(?) does.

Now I like show-tunes, but the thought of LA singing them is fairly horrifying.
LA is the most "accessible" or "mainstream" of what is sometimes called performance art. Turns out though, she has a really good singing voice too. A lot of her stuff is more spoken than sung. Kind of ironic, in-the-know criticism of society stuff. Used to be a big pioneer in all sorts of electronic media (played the electric violin, invented this musical spear instrument).
"O, Superman" is the song that actually made it into somewhat mainstream radio playlists.
You know Peter Gabriel's "This is the picture"? He and LA wrote it and recorded it together. On his album he sings lead. On hers, she does (there it's called "Excellent Birds"). Wow, just realized that stuff's almost 20 years old.

Coupla hundred people. Don't know exactly. Humor isn't my strongest suit... I once cracked up my boss by blurting out one day, rather apropos of nothing, that I thought one of my faults was that I lacked comic timing. Apparently she found this quite funny (and well timed?).

PeopleSoft is indeed software. Huge client-server application server kind of stuff. Sits on top of a relational database of your choice (Oracle, SQL Server, etc.). Competes with stuff like SAP, Baan, Oracle Applications.
Made their initial mark in human resources software, and have branched out to everything and anything else.
Having some database skills to start with, I sort of stumbled into PeopleSoft application development work a few years ago. It'll keep me going till my Java skills and the job market get in sync.

Well I'm still very busy sorting out some things in my life, but, everything is actually going great.
I've designed a logo for my own site and most probably publish it this weekend. I've also nagged my former employer long enough that they finally have ordered the notebook they have promised me for the work I'm still doing for them on my free day, my new job has a 36 day work week (4 x 9). It should be delivered within 10 days. For those of you that want to drool, its a Dell Latitude C810, Intel Mobile Pentium III processor 1.13 GHz, 512 meg memory, 30 meg hard disk, DVD / CD RW with 15.0'' TFT UXGA+ colorscreen (1600*1200).
It looks like I made a mayor mistake taking the position I did with my new employer ING. I'm a functional administrator for the development tools on the IBM mainframe. That is, I have to test and accept new releases of compilers, debuggers etc. on behalf of the users. I also have to make sure that the users get the correct training and/or manuals. I also give general support for these products. Now after two months I've realized its not really my cup of tea , I'm a coder have always loved it and always will I think. But there is hope on the horizon. Cant tell you about that yet, it's still very hush hush
All in all I'm very chuffed with 2002 so far.
Yep I know I should have replied to your e-mail Mr. Matola , sorry but it fell between the crack. It looks like peoplesoft is going to be very big here at ING by the way. We are in the midst of a mayor restructure and in one of the information session about it peoplesoft was mentioned as one of the critical areas. Must confess I know nuttin. Good luck on the talk keep us posted pse.
As for the lack of snow. Yep winters aint what they used to be. We hardly had any ice here. In the Netherlands skating is very big in winter, hey we have a lot of shallow ditches here. Cant say I've seen any kids skating in our neighborhood the last 3 winters. Looks like I'll have to vote for the green party next election.
As for what keeps the whole of the Netherlands busy, the new currency opf course, heck I cant get used to it, and of the big wedding this Saturday. Our crown prince is getting married to a Argentine beauty.
    Ok enough said.

That's interesting, I'd guess you're just the kind of "people peson" that would like doing support. Nice that you have hope for a change, though.

Geez Johannes, I've never heard of anyone who works as much as you do: a 36 day work week!! Whatever you do, don't tell the capitalists how you manage that, we'll all be out of work!!

Hey thanks for pointing out , my error Maureen
As for me propects. Things are taking a mayor turn, much much faster than I imagined, heck I only found out about the possibilties myself yesterday, my boss was phoned to come dicuss xfer possiblities this afternoon. He just spoke to me.
ps found this that's proof that I'm right

I have been busy at the pharmacy, trying to convince my 13 year old son that he really is capable of getting decent grades in school, and trying to save enough money for a new computer. My son's games have eaten up all of the space on my hard drive, and my poor little system is slowing down terribly. If I can get him a fairly inexpensive system for his games, then I can kick him off of my machine, and have it all for java programming. I have really bogged down with Servlets-4. I'm stuck on a problem that I've been wrestling with, and I'm frustrated because I haven't had time to devote to finding a solution. It seems like everything else has had to come 1st. I hope to be back in the saddle again soon. It sounds like everyone else is busy too! JDJ- don't get discouraged by your current situation, I'm sure a good solution will present itself to you if you stay positive! The bell just rang, I have to get back to my next class. I'm substitue teaching today!

Over here in Blighty (England just in case.. (im surprised you don't use chuffed in the US, damn fine word, you should all try and use it in a conversation today to gain general looks of confusion and amazement)) we haven't had any snow but plenty of rain and wind.
While i am not trying to sort out why a double is what it is in cattledrive, i am both looking for a new job that will let me use Java and web development more (bit of a shortage of jobs in the UK at the moment due to large company job cuts), studying java ranch, studying for java prog cert, trying to remain interested in my job (a heady mix of web design and development and running a commodities research desk). On top of this improving my Photoshop, dreamweaver and javascript and playing as much squash as possible with a bit of rugby on the weekends to keep the heart pumping.
Its nice to see what everyone else gets up to.
    Cheers and keep busy
    Sam

I'm in Denver for a conference. I'd love to go to Java One in March, but I'm the new guy in the office, so I was chosen to go to a SQL Server conference when another co-worker dropped out. It's very weird for me to hear so much talk about .NET and ASP. Yuck.
Other than that, working in an Extreme Programming team developing in Java, and enjoying life with my new bride.

How did you do in Electronics test last night Greg ??. Hope well you had me confused I though you meant I reviewed Inside Serlvets but later I realized you must have meant Java Developers Journal. Cant find the review on their site though.
Carol, hey like I said I'm chuffed with 2002 so far
Like you site Coggo.com Sam. One suggestion though, if I may, how about opening the site, one selects to go to in your "The top 10" page, in a new window.
Love the format with the drop-down box though .
Hey Lance, Extreme Programming team developing in Java & new bride, You've got it made man
Erik Peter Gragert, is also dutch and I know a Rosie Vogel hangs out in MD sometimes. CCant say I know of many others though.

Ditto, and at least we only have to come up with 5%, if we can't get the seller to carry. Oh well, just think, few years from now, you'll be moving on up to something better
If you haven't, Matt, check out Core Servlets and JSPs, it is actually well written, much better than any of the other Sun books I have read.

I am doing 3% and the seller is paying most of the closing costs.

    How'd the presentation go Michael?
Now for a quick update (for those that care):
Found a house, it's out in a place called Deer Trail, CO. Has 5.6 acres (plenty of room for the horses, plus maybe one or two more, some goats, chickens... ), house is 1400 sq. ft. Got quite a deal for it, and it already has a huge garage, barn, work shed, corral, good fencing. House has been completely redone also. Only downside, it's about 1 hour drive to work and Denver, so need to find myself a used car with really good gas mileage. Don't want to drive my truck back and forth all the time!
Only had to do 3% also Matt, so that was a very good thing. Close on March 15th. How's y'alls going?

Hey Mike Matola, figured I'd revive this thread to ask how your presentation went. Just this past week I gave my first course/workshop and am glad that it went pretty well.
Also saw a mention of PeopleSoft during a presentation of WebCT, an elearning platform, and thought, aha I know a guy...

My presentation. Well, overall I feel positive about it.
The content was good, but I rushed a bit through the delivery. There were a few good questions, but overall I had a difficult time sensing whether the audience thought it was useful.
Going into this whole exercise, I knew my topic would be of interest to a very limited audience, so that was no surprise. But it's a bit frustrating when you don't get any real feedback.
(The next day I went to a presentation that was particularly good, so I went up to the presenter aftwards and told her what a good presentation it was -- good examples, answered several of the questions I had on the topic, etc. -- mainly because I now know what it's like not to get any useful feedback.)
(And of course I had already updated my resume to include this presentation before I actually attended the conference...)
Las Vegas was mildy amusing. I certainly had a good time on my first visit, but it's not someplace I have an immediate desire to return to again and again (like some other places I've visited).

Okay, so I've holding out on sharing what's been going on. I now have a new baby girl.
