Hey, I just wandered in here looking for some info and I noticed that there are Mobile forums... Good deal, but I am developing for the Blackberry.

What are the odds of adding a Blackberry sub-forum under your Mobile section? Afterall, Blackberry devices natively runs Java ME in addition to RIMs own extended Java.

Please please please???

Note: I know absolutely nothing about Blackberry development, so this is probably a basic question.
It it's Java, why wouldn't it go in the existing Java ME forum?

There does already seem to be lots of Blackberry discussion in the Java ME forum. Also, it is true that Blackberry devices will run Java ME as long as the application is built using the RIM JDE.

However, the Blackberry SDK is so much deeper than Java ME. RIM (Research In Motion) has built numerous class libraries that extend the functionality of Java ME and vastly improve UI development. This gives native Blackberry applications a very clean look and feel compared to similar Java ME applications. Also, the SDK has classes that give developers access to the unique features of Blackberry devices, like the trackball or touch screen in newer devices. As far as I know, these simply aren't available in Java ME, although I could be wrong on that one.

It would be nice to have a specific forum for those who are developing strictly for Blackberry devices as opposed to strict Java ME for other devices that may ONLY support Java ME. Besides, there does seem to be a shortage of good Blackberry specific development forums around the internet. Since Java Ranch is already such a friendly place, it seems like a good addition in my opinion.

I think it is possible.

I own a blackberry. I always keep telling myself that one of these days I'm gonna start writing some little java apps to put on it.

My concern is in creating a forum and then having it fizzle. The upside is that we appear to have a fair bit of traffic already. So maybe that mitigates this concern. I would like to have a good kickoff. It would be cool if there was a really great blackberry book to promote in that forum. Or maybe something that we could give away. Or maybe an actual blackberry. Or maybe if RIM took some sort of interest in us.

I'm up for it. I guess I would just need .... something ... to get past the "that's a nice idea" stage.

Yeah, RIM getting involved in some way would be huge, but I doubt that will happen. The company as a whole seems to keep their cards very close to their collective chest and they don't get involved in much of anything.

Also, there isn't much out there for Blackberry books, I have looked. There are books on administering BES and one such book has a large section on developing for Blackberry devices. However, it looks like that book is rather outdated and not at all geared for the newbie.

Unfortunately, it is quite possible that a dedicated Blackberry dev forum would fizzle. My only reason for thinking it may succeed is that all other BB dev forums are on BB user-oriented sites whereas this would be the only BB developer forum on an actual developer-oriented site, specifically a Java developer site no less. I would hope that it might turn some people on to developing for the Blackberry if they realize that it is available, accessible, and that it runs Java.

Following the other thread and then re-reading this ....

I'm still open to the idea of doing this.

If there is a shortage of books in this space, then .... is there a way we could put an actual blackberry into a promotion? Or would that sound too much like a cell phone ad?

Maybe it is time to get creative: what else can we do to prime a new forum?
