Considering the vast range of people and culture that this site attracts I think it would be interesting to find out what we all eat when we go about our daily routine. The staple food where I live is rice. In India food is sometimes catogorized into North Indian and South Indian food. The so called "South Indians" consume more rice and "North Indians" like Rotis and Chapatis. Thats not to say the people from the south dont enjoy food from the north or vice versa. Here are some pictures of what food looks like here. Post some pictures of what food looks like at your place and what you eat. All pictures courtesy Wiki and Google Images.

Bearing in mind that I'm in Texas where the cuisine is heavily influenced by Southwestern and Mexican:

Prime beef steaks: "It's what's for dinner"

Smoked sausage: "Food of the gods"

BBQ brisket: "As Texan as you can get"

Texas Chili: "None of them dad-burned sissy beans"

Pepper jelly: "What real men put on their scones"

Tamales: "Love in a corn husk"

That's it...

I just saw a copy of "Everything I Ate: A Year in the Life of My Mouth" by Tucker Shaw, which is a journal of everything the author ate for one entire year.

I may just do that this weekend: take a picture of EVERYTHING I eat (before I eat it), and maybe jot down the time and some other info.

Who's with me on this. C'mon track all your food this weekend and we'll compare on Monday.

Sounds fun, but I'm sure that I'll forget. But I'll try...

Did I never post my recipe?

  • For each pound of potatoes, you need one egg, one half-cup of flour, and a quarter-cup of grated onion.
  • Peel the potatoes and submerge each one in a bowl of cold water until they're all done.
  • Grate the potatoes using the coarse disk of a food processor. Immediately submerge the grated potatoes in a big bowl of cold water. Stir them around and let them soak for five to ten minutes.
  • Meanwhile, combine all the other ingredients in another large bowl.
  • Rinse and drain the grated potatoes, then add to the other ingredients. Mix well. Add some salt, maybe a little pepper, to taste.
  • Heat a shallow (1/3" or so) pan of canola oil to 350F, till a strand of potato sizzles immediately when added.
  • Take two tablespoons from a regular table service and use them to mold little quenelles and drop into the oil. Put four or five into the pan, without crowding. Fry till just golden on one side, flip over (I just use a fork) and fry on the other side for a bit. Use a thermometer if you have to, and try to keep the oil temperature at 350. Drain briefly as you remove from the pan, then keep on paper towels on a tray in a 220F oven until they're all done.

  • Serve with
    1) Sour cream and applesauce (Hannukah favorite)
    2) Sour cream and chives
    3) Virtually anything else!

Anyway, here's the ones we made tonight (this is three pounds of potatoes)
