Hi
Thank you for reading my post.
I am going to buy a new monitor as different monitor support different resolution, i want to know what is prefered monitor resolution for a developer when using a 17" CRT?

i had 15" and it was 1024*768, is it ok that monitor support 1600*1200?
is that good for developer using 17" monitor?

thanks

Get one that supports at least 1600 and use whatever works for your eyes and conditions. When I first ran a 21" at 1024x768 people thought it was way too small. My eye doctor said it's good exercise as long as you're not straining. Nowadays I run my laptop at that and my 19" at 1600x1200. I have a flat panel at work that's very pretty but I'm disappointed it only goes to 1280x1024. I am old enough to use the ctrl-mousewheel to zoom text on some web sites but I'm not giving up my screen real estate.

CRT monitors look best when they are running at a frequency of 75Hz or higher. Resolution is inversely proportional to the frequency. The higher the resolution, lower the frequency. So just see what is the highest possible resolution which works at 75Hz. If you go any higher, the monitor will look kinda blurry.

Depends what bracketing method you use. Obviously followers of the best method will need slightly more screen space to see all their code on one page, where as the heretics need slightly less

Anything over 1280x1024 leads to text which for me is too small to see on even a 19" monitor.
When I still used a 17" I never ran it at over 1024x768 for that same reason.

With TFTs, go up one size (a 17" TFT is roughly equivalent to a 19" CRT in supported resolution).

I am a 'monitor-and-resolution' freak. I tried different resolutions for my 17 inches monitor and came to the conclusion that even though it can support higher resolutions, I was not satisfied with the clarity, beyond the resoution '1024 x 768', which is also the maximum (clear) resolution for a 15 inches monitor.

If you are going to get a monitor for development, I would suggest a bigger monitor than a 17'' monitor. Perhaps a 21'' monitor.

I had once posted a question here regarding monitor sizes, resolutions and programmer's preference, here is the link: Click here

Hope that helps,
Srikanth

Might be interesting to know that in this country 17" is the LEGAL MINIMUM size for people working for more than 4 hours a day with a computer.
But if you've ever used something larger you don't really want to go back

I guess you should check the native resolution of the lcd panel. I have a 15" UXGA panel with a native resolution of 1600x1200 and everything looks brilliant on it. If I set that a lower resolution is awful to look at, everything looks smudged! Stick to the native resolution, if you can, try it out before you buy!

Good luck!
