I'm a relatively competent Java programmer, and I've put off studying for the exam too long. What benefits does this book offer over others? If I'm coming from a background of Java, Python, C/C++ and other languages, is the subtext of "a programmer's guide" going to benefit me over one that is straight Java? Thanks-

All I can tell you is that many Java developers have reported that they learnt a thing or two that they did not know from before by dipping into our book.
I beleive the review questions reinforce the concepts and programming excercises make you apply them.
Many readers use the book as a handy reference long after they are done with the exam.
I suggest that you have a look at the sample chapters on the book web site.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
