My question is: How did you get started with Java, and what has been your background/professional experience with it?

When Java came along, my department decided to use it in our introductory programming course.
Guess who got the honor of developing and running the course?
Then I got the dubious honor of lecturing our intermediate programming course.
We developed a lot of material for these courses, which eventually found its way into our Java books.
(We have written non-certification Java books as well. See
http://www.ii.uib.no/~khalid/.)
Then I moved onto developing a course in web-application development using
J2EE.
At the moment I am also running a course in Software Security.
All this Java-expertise has been applied in developing e-learning components, in particular a content management system for running our net-based programming courses.
Java technologies are entrenched and I believe will continue to do in the foreseeable future.
Java continues to evolve and it has been a fun ride so far.
