To give a new twist to this phoenix-like thread, are there any books that are still being written you want to read?
Mine are
1. Mark Bittner, the author of The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, is working on his new book about his experience of being homeless and living on the streets.
2. Anything Jonathan Safran Foer is writing right now.
3. I Am a Strange Loop by Douglas R. Hofstadter (of course) [ February 20, 2007: Message edited by: Mapraputa Is ]
Urasawa Naoki's remake of Pluto, one of Tezuka Osamu's Tetsuwan Atomu story. There's like one volume per year... And now that you're talking of Effective Java...
"Josh Bloch's Effective Java 2nd Edition is supposedly coming out in under two weeks." - Any idea when it will be out in the UK?

Well, amazon.co.uk lists it as 28 June 2008. I seriously doubt there's that big a gap between US and UK availability - more likely is that at least one of those dates is wrong. My experience is that any publication date several months in the future is probably just someone's wild guess - whereas one that's just a week or two away seems somewhat more likely to be accurate. However it's still entirely possible that the data at amazon.com is in error. Best to wait and see, I guess. [ October 31, 2007: Message edited by: Jim Yingst ]

The resurfacing of this thread prompted me to search for new Lipsyte material. I found that he is teaching fiction at Columbia University. Interestingly, I had a very vivid dream last night about participating in a year-long class on experimental writing. So if I win the lottery, I'm quitting my job, moving to New York, and enrolling.
And Jim is still waiting on A Dance with Dragons. I still need to read A Game of Thrones.

And for Effective Java 2nd edition. Amazon US says May 28, 2008, while the UK site now says 28 Aug 2008. I doubt either has any real info at this point.
