Is it advisable to do this?

I have Ubuntu installed to a USB flash drive. It's a handy way to take your personalized environment with you to other computers. Unlike a Live CD, you can do updates and save documents. Look here for a walk-through of the process.
Of course, you give up some performance using an external drive. Whether it is advisable or not depends on your requirements.

You can if you want to. An external drive may be slower than an internal one, but people have been happily booting Ubuntu (and Knoppix before it) from CDs for a long time, and they're a LOT slower.

You can darn near boot Ubuntu from a cardboard box these days.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
