My son and I were talking about "Speed Racer" yesterday. And then I tried to relate a different cartoon that I was addicted to when I was young. But .... I can't remember the name of the cartoon!
The plot featured something about the need to get some old submarine-looking thing spaceworthy. It had some sort of big energy cannon mounted down the middle and would shoot out the tip. They had some craggy-old-guy-captain and a lot of young kids as fighters.
Anybody remember this? Or remember the name? [ April 16, 2007: Message edited by: Paul Wheaton ]
I remember the 'wave motion gun' and a stack of stock film (ie the same film used all over the place rather than recreating battles from scratch every time)
Uchuu senkan Yamato. It's the name of a famous animation series in Japan. It sounds like StarBlazers Paul is talking about. (Yamato is actually the name of a warship during WWII.)
Remember SkyDiver from the 1970-71 show UFO? The front of the submarine was a jet that could launch from underwater. In this photo, you can see it said "SKYDIVER" on the side. "SKY" was on the jet, and "DIVER" was on the sub, so when the parts separated, each remained appropriately labeled. (Of course, we only saw this model from the port side.)
