Reading bar codes using JMF

I am trying to use JMF to connect my camcorder to a bar code recognition program (zxing).

1. Has anyone done that before me, i.e. can I turn my computer into a barcode reader without any programming, using Java or anything else?

2. If not, how do I capture still images from my camcorder a few times per second without becoming an expert in JMF? So far, I was able to view input from my camcorder in real time in MediaPlayer bean; now I just need still images from that. Of course I can do screen scraping; but scraping a moving screen is icky, and besides, I suspect there might be resolution loss. Are there better options?
