If you are a true Java newbie but have some experience I would recommend reading Head First Java by Sierra and Bates, just make sure you get the 2nd edition so it covers Java 5.0. Possibly Java for Dummies, which I have heard good things about would be good too, but I have no experience with that one.
Once you've done that I recommend SCJP for Java 5 or Java 6, depending on which exam you are looking to take, by Sierra and Bates. I'm currently using it to study and it is immensely helpful.
I have no idea about timelines since it is kinda different from person to person. If you aren't doing this for a requirement and just personally, take the time to learn all the little nuances and truly understand the language and don't try to rush through everything.
Just so you know this is the results forum where people post what scores they get on the exams. For other exam-related queries
you should use the SCJP forum, at least for SCJP questions.
And, of course, Welcome to the Ranch.
