We don't usually remove old posts, unless there is something "wrong" with them. They might be useful for other people; we do occasionally get people referring to posts several years old which still contain helpful information.

In my case, though, I am having people copying my work and turning it in as their own. I have been requested to have all of my posts removed. Can you do that, please?

Did a quick look at your posts. I don't see anything more than simple homework assignments -- certainly nothing that can be classified as IP. Is there a particular thread with content that you can refer to? We can remove content on a case by case basis.

BTW, moving this to the RO forum...

Well, I was told to have all of them removed. Deleting only one of them is not going to work. Need I get the person in charge involved here? Can you please just delete all of the postings? It's pretty simple.

You are already dealing with the people in charge here.

Actually, that would be quite time consuming.

First, it's pretty hard to remove something from the internet. There are sites that archive other sites on a regular basis, and even changing the ranch TODAY won't change what those archived YESTERDAY. It's kind of like asking someone to take the pee out of the pool.

Second, anybody with the title "moderator" or "sheriff" IS one of the people in charge. Making thinly veiled threats is not going to endear anyone to your cause.

Third, even if you're posts are removed/edited, if anyone quoted you, those will still be there.

Finally, you can certainly ASK for posts you made to be removed, but neither the owner of the site, nor his staff as his designated representatives, are under any obligation to do so. In fact, they have compelling reasons NOT to, as doing so violates the philosophy of the JavaRanch.

David,

I would be happy to personally do that for you. Please put $1000 in my paypal account at paul at javaranch dot com.

Of course, this will upset a lot of people. People who have taken a lot of time to try and help you. People who took the time to help you knowing that it would not only help you, but thousands of people that come by later to see that thread.

But I'm willing to screw them all over for a thousand dollars!

I'm already fantasizing about how I'll spend the money!

If you no longer wish to have your name associated with those posts, you can change your display name to a fictitious -but real-sounding!- name. In due course, the search engines will pick that up (not archiving sites like the Wayback Machine, though).

This is what one of my former manager calls "peeing in the drinking well"... It will be difficult to stop you (original poster -- not Paul) from doing it. But basically, after being helped, you are trying assure that no one else can be helped. Next time you want some help, people are going to remember that you won't even let that help be useful to others -- much less be willing to pay it back by helping someone else.

And actually, I don't think $1000 will upset anyone. It may mean an upgrade to faster servers sooner -- in exchange for a bit less searchable content.

To kind of, but not completely defend the OP, and I think the OP should give more information before making a demand.

But, I am thinking the Original Poster is a student at a school, posted stuff he wasn't supposed to, and now his teachers are coming down hard on him. And unfortunately for the OP and the teachers, it is too late to try to resolve it by removing the posts here, because as was stated, they are already somewhere else too in the search engines all cached and saved.

I feel bad for the original poster. But I think $1000 would be a great donation to Paul and JavaRanch to help get bigger servers.

Exactamondo. I feel the same.

Nice one.

However I do not see how people copying the OPs work should affect his grades or life at school. Why should the guy that did the hard work be punished. Its not like he meant for the other kids to copy his work.

David, perhaps whoever wants this content deleted can write to the ranch to get the problem sorted.

He could try, but I have a feeling unless there are copyright issues with something he posted the posts won't be removed unless he does it himself.
